Viridarium/Garden
Description:
Located against the northern end of the eastern wall of the garden was an altar. The altar had a square form and was constructed from masonry. Today the altar is in bad condition, with its cultic function determined from early paintings of the garden after excavation in the early 19th century. One drawing indicates that the altar was decorated with red stripes, creating a cross on the front face of the altar. The altar sat between a fountain and the summer triclinium.
