Peristyle/Portico

Description:

Located on the north wall of the peristyle was a shrine, comprised of a square niche with wall paintings. The shrine was located just to the left of the entrance to the underground kitchen and latrine space. The interior was plastered and decorated with painted red flowers on a white background and appeared to have a projecting base. Flanking the niche opening were the Lares holding rhyta and patera. Below the niche were two confronting serpents with a cylindrical altar in between them. The altar was painted in imitation marble. The serpents sit among plant material with flowers.
